July 17 and 18 marked the last field trip for UBSA 2009, and what a grand finale it was! We arrived at our destination, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, 8 hours later, only 30 minutes later than our initial e.t.a. First, students checked into the dorm rooms in Ivy Hall at Southern Oregon University. We were all excited about having a true college living experience. After getting settled in our accommodations and resting a bit, we dressed for the play and took a leisurely walk to a nearby Mexican restaurant, Plaza del Pueblo, for dinner. At the restaurant, we were greeted with an extended table set for all 25 of us. Dinner was an event unto itself, including several rounds of telephone and the entire restaurant serenading Ms. Dedrah Lewis with birthday songs. After dinner, we journeyed to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for a 7 p.m. Prologue workshop. In the Prologue workshop, one of the OSF company members provided some background on the play we saw that evening, "Much Ado about Nothing." The workshop was participatory, so several UBSA students had the opportunity to say lines from the play. During the short window of time between the workshop and play, we had the opportunity to catch a "Green Show" in the courtyard of the OSF grounds. The performers that evening were "Circus Tribal," a vaudevillian belly dancing troop. By 8:30 p.m. our group was seated in the first Elizabethan theater in America to view, for most of us, our first OSF performance under the stars. The play itself was a brilliant production! After the 2 hour 45 minute show concluded, we hurried back to the SOU dorm and lights were out for the nigh 45 minutes later. The next morning our tight schedule continued. First, we ate breakfast in Stevenson Union, then a group of us did the self-guided tour of Southern Oregon University that didn't get accomplished the day before. This all occurred before 9:00 am, which was our designated departure time Saturday morning. Our only activity before leaving town was a backstage tour of OSF. During our tour we toured all of the OSF theaters and learned about the history of the festival, what's involved in the amazing craft of theater and some personal career anecdotes from one of the actresses in OSF, also our tour guide. When the tour concluded, we swiftly boarded the bus and began the journey home. Below are a few pictures "noting" this amazing adventure.
